Regional Badr-Fayoum Road
(Second Greater Cairo Ring Road)
The second Greater Cairo ring road (Badr-El Fayoum) is one of the most strategic projects in Egypt. The total length of the selected ring road is about 230 km, with more than 85% on desert land and 15% on arable land. No urbanised areas will be crossed by the road. The project began in 2001 and is to be completed in 2010. The significance of this project is to:
- Reduce the traffic capacity at the Greater Cairo entrances and the existing ring road (the first Greater Cairo ring road).
- Support the process of urban de-concentration and the growth of new urban communities.
- Connect the new industrial zones to the existing main highways.
- Protect arable lands from urban encroachment.
