New Barrage and Development Studies, Nagaa Hammadi, Egypt
The existing old barrage in Nagaa Hammadi in Upper Egypt was built 70 years ago and was thus facing problems with the deterioration and aging of the construction materials. In addition, the degradation of the river downstream of the barrage has put the structures stability in question. The downstream concrete weir on the apron, which counter balances the hydraulic head, has been washed away in several locations. This led to the urgent need for replacement as well as the construction of a new power station. The new barrage project was executed 1999-2006 for a contract sum of US$ 450 million.
