Additional Esna Navigation Lock Project
As tourism to Egypt in general grows, so grows the amount of marine traffic on the Nile, particularly the number of tourist cruise boats navigating the Niles waters. This increase in water traffic necessitated the construction of an additional navigation lock at Esna City, Egypt, on the west side of the Nile, beside the existing navigation lock. The additional lock also allows for contract berths in front of and behind the barrage. It is 156 m long and 17 m wide and can be used for two large tourist ships or six ordinary river transportation boats. The value of this project was 150 million Egyptian pounds and was executed between October 2001 and April 2004.
