Greater Cairo Wastewater Project
The project objectives were to rehabilitate the existing collection system, to build a new collection and conveyance system, to expel sewage away from the city, to treat wastewater to contemporary standards, to operate and maintain all facilities properly and to reuse treated wastewater beneficially and utilise processed sludge as a soil conditioner/fertiliser.
The project is divided into three main areas:
- East bank of the River Nile, extending from Maadi on the south to El-Gabal El-Asfar on the north, from Nasr City on the east to the Nile on the west.
- West bank of the Nile, bounded by Embaba on the north and the Pyramids on the south, the Nile on the east and Abu Rawwash on the west.
- Helwan, which extends from south Maadi on the north to Tibbeen on the south, and from 15th of May City on the east to the Nile on the west.
