Wikalet Al-Ghoury
This structure, unique to Cairene architecture, is called a rab-wikala. Built in 1504-05 by the Mamluk sultan Al-Ghouri, the top three floors were organised into apartment-like triplexes (rab), while the bottom two floors were storage rooms for merchants (the wikala). The rab-wikala is a very prominent structure in Historic Cairo, attracting hundreds of visitors each year, so the conservation and restoration work that was needed required a company with experience working in the district in similar conditions, and ACE was eminently qualified. ACEs work on the project was completed between November 1999 and July 2000. This encompassed:
- Architectural survey and documentation
- Site survey and structural slope monitoring
- Photographic and video documentation
