Al-Azhar Mosque
Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, Egypt, is a landmark of Egyptian and Middle Eastern culture and religion. The monuments of Historic Cairo are under threat from numerous stressors, including a rising water table and intermittent earthquakes, so it was not surprising that Al-Azhar, one of the oldest mosques and universities in the Middle East, needed shoring. The project comprised restoration of the superstructure and support of the mosques foundations by micro-piles, in the areas consisting of:
- Northeastern zollah (shed)
- Southwestern zollah
- Fatimid zollah including al-magaz (corridor)
- Osmanli zollah, all the A/M sheds are shaded by wooden roof
- Main façade agglomerate (main entrance)
- Minarets and domes
- Education area including the Mamluk schools and historical dormitory
