Dubai Light Rail Project

A transit options study was carried out in Dubai and identified the need for a rail transit system to supply additional transportation network capacity to relieve growing traffic congestion in high-demand corridors. Dubai’s light rail project, which is likely to start operation sometime in 2009-10, will need approximately AED 8 billion for the first phase which will see a 50 km track being laid from the Dubai International Airport to Jebel Ali.

The project, which would be 30% underground and 70% running on tracks elevated over the ground, also plans to carry some 400 million passengers by 2010.
