Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of 66 Bridges in Uganda

Most of the structures were built as simply supported single- or multi-span single-lane concrete deck on small-beam section bridges, a few others were single or multi-span murram-filled steel box sections, steel trusses or bailey bridges installed for emergency purposes. A number of the sites with existing culvert batteries were either broken or washed off.

The main objective of the project was to enable the financier to appraise the rehabilitation programme and this was performed in two stages:

First stage: General examination of all 66 bridges and classification into: Group I: No remedial measures required. Group II: Type and amount of remedial measures not requiring further technical investigation. Group III: More detailed investigations necessary.
