Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of 66 Bridges in Uganda

This complicated and impressive project concerned the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 66 bridges in Uganda along the trunk and feeder roads found in the northern half of Uganda, in the districts of Arua, Moyo, Nebbi, Gulu, Kitgum, Lira, Apac, Kotido, Moroto, Soroti, Kumi and Masindi.

Most of proposed 66 sites are existing bridges consisting of very old structures built in the 1930s to 1950s (and a few from the 1960s), and have therefore outlived their design-life period. In addition, the existing facilities were built when traffic volume and axle loads were lower than now and some of them have been affected by weather conditions (especially the El Nio weather of 1997). Their present load-bearing capacity cannot be relied on for the safe passage of the present traffic volume with the attendant high loads.
